This water wheel was designed and built by the University of Wales in the 1980s or 1990s. Much is made of the environmentally correct aspect of generating electricity with water power, but I don't recall any information or conjecture at the site about the characteristics of the historical water wheels that powered the mill in the 18c or 19c. This wheel is 8.2 meters in diameter, runs at 4.77 rpm, and is geared up to turn a generator at 1020 rpm. The transmission (silver) and generator (blue, finned) are seen on the left side of the wheel. The generator is said to be rated at 30 kW, and the flow of water can be adjusted to 100, 200, or 400 liters per second. NEXT LIST
