PAT005: "Was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, 4/7/1872, moved to Hartley because her father who was a farmer and had 160 acres of bottom land traded for a large tract at Hartley. She went to a school in Des Moines and received a diploma to teach. Sometime after this she took shorthand in Council Bluffs and held several secretarial positions, among them one at Atkinson, Nebraska and one at O'Neil, Nebraska. It was at Atkinson where whe was secretary for a banker whom R.E. Pate had backed that she met the latter. Following these positions she had a secretarial position at the Chicago World's Fair preceding her marriage to R.E. Pate. As he had backed another man in a bank at Sumner, Nebraska--30 mi. NW of Kearney--they went there for awhile then moved to Pender, Nebraska--40 mi SW of Sioux City, Iowas--where their first child Maurice was born. Mother died young. Father remarried, taking his wife and son Fred Davis to Monte Vista. RMR lived with sister in Iowa for awhile."
