Tredegar House was built by the Morgan family in the late 15c or early 16c, though what you see now is mainly the result of remodelling 1664-72. It is outside Newport, the large port city at the mouth of the Rhondda Valley through which coal was shipped. The Morgans, owning the land through which the coal had to be moved, got even richer on this industrial traffic.
