The Rhondda valley was the site of many coal mines, and this Heritage Park is the tribute and memorial to the people (men, women and children) who dug the mines and brought the coal to the surface to fuel the industrial revolution and to make people like Earl Bute rich. The headworks for one of the coal mines is shown on the right, the smoke stack is for the steam engine powering the winding mechanism and other processes at the mine, and the large building housed the winding engine and received the coal-filled cars that were lifted to the surface.
