Pottery to be fired was placed in saggars, rough pottery containers such as the object on the left. Saggers protected the pottery from the flames and ash inside the kiln. Saggers were stacked many feet high in the kiln. In front of the sagger is a small three-armed spacer to separate plates that were stacked within a sagger. Saggers were also made at Nantgarw, and forms for their manufacture are shown on the right. Saggers could only be fired a few times before they needed to be replaced. NEXT LIST
