Kidwelly has many roller mills like these, through which plates of iron or steel were passed. If the plates had been heated, the mill would reduce their thickness. Cold milling would correct uneveness and burnish the surface. In this cold mill, the power was supplied by shafts through the brick wall on the left. The boiler in the background provided steam to the engine behind the wall. All this shiny paint is new; when conservation of Kidwelly began the site was a shambles, and the process of conservation is far from complete. Kidwelly is a work in progress.
