Caerleon was one of three major fortresses in Roman Britain, but there is much less above ground than can be seen in many sites in France and Italy. This was an amphitheater with a capacity of an entire legion. I wish I could remember exactly the way a sign at this site referred to gladiatorial contests. It was something like "regrettable spectacles of which the Romans were so fond". NEXT LIST
